International Students

International students are a vibrant and diverse community. OISH creates a space for international students to connect and feel a sense of belonging.

How do OISH students feel?

“In 2019, I came to Australia to do a master in public health at Wollongong University. I arrived broke but excited about my future, I was determined to make the most of it. It took me seven months to find a job as a Dental Assistant, I could finally afford rent and food.

And then 2020 came and turned all our lives upside down. I was not fired for my job but my clinic went into lockdown and was closed for months. When it reopened, I was only offered a third of my usual workload.

Then I got an invitation to a zoom meeting with two people from Sydney Community Forum and International Students from all over Australia. They were the first people who asked us to share our stories, they wanted to empower us instead of just giving charity.

We shared our struggles with a wider audience and our campaign for justice gathered momentum and led to the NSW Government initiative offering international students temporary crisis accomodation.

OISH was the space I turned to in my hour of need -

I intended to stay engaged as we build power and opportunity.”

Dr. Sarah Jafari

“I am a very proud international student who has had more jobs then barbie because this is the essence of who we are, resilient people that are willing to work, study and travel really far in order to get the right opportunity.”
